Who We Worship is Who We Become
I recently heard a pastor say, “Who or what we worship is who we become.” The truth is we will all worship something or someone, it is just a matter of what or who. Who or what do you worship? If we are Christian we might quickly respond, “I worship the Lord”, however worship is more than just attending a weekly service, singing a few songs and listening to a message. Worship is what we “attribute worth to”, what we bow down to, or what we value above other things, not just on Sunday morning but throughout the week. The true focus of our worship is revealed in where we invest our time, what we think about most often, and where we spend our money.
With that being said, what or who is the focus of your worship? Where do you really attribute worth to throughout your week? If we do in fact become what we worship then what are you becoming? We are meant to worship God, because God deserves our worship for who he is and what he has done for us, and as we worship him, we reflect him more and more (namely, his character). We are like a mirror reflecting the Light. In fact worship of God (the Father) and the Lamb (Jesus) is the primary activity that is going on in heaven now and eternally (Rev. 5:1-14). If your worship is not primarily on God, how will you readjust your time, thoughts, money or resources so the Lord becomes the focus of your worship and not other things or other people? Start your day with the Lord by spending time with him in prayer and reading and reflecting on his Word (these are forms of worship). Give generously and sacrificially to the Lord as an expression of your worship of him. Turning your thoughts to him throughout the day, by giving him praise and thanks.
